California Autism and ABA Resources
California has both the largest BCBA workforce in the country and a unique Regional Center system that provides autism services regardless of insurance status. The 21 Regional Centers across the state coordinate ABA, respite, and other supports, giving families two separate funding pathways: Medi-Cal and the Regional Center. Provider density is high in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and San Diego, though the Central Valley and rural northern California face significant shortages.

Medi-Cal covers ABA with no annual dollar cap and no age limit beyond 21. California's Department of Developmental Services (DDS) regional centers also provide autism services, including respite, transportation, and supported employment, for individuals of all ages.
Early intervention in California (ages 0–3)
California Early Start
If your child is under 3, California families may qualify for free early intervention services through California Early Start. Services can include speech therapy, developmental support, and behavior support at no cost, even before a formal diagnosis. The ECTA Center maintains a verified directory of California's Part C coordinator and program contacts.

California OSEP State Lead
Once your child turns 3, services shift from early intervention to the public school system under IDEA Part B. Your state's OSEP State Lead oversees special education implementation, including IEPs and school-based support, across California.
